The Precarious Line Between Protection and the Planet of Sustainable Packaging

Sustainability is in. So many businesses, especially those in the ecommerce world, are working towards sustainable solutions for their packaging.

It is important because it reduces environmental waste and also makes your brand look better. However, durability is a big part of this, and making sure that you understand the balance is important.   The right packaging will do both, providing the best of both worlds to your customers, and here, we’ll go over each of these different elements that play a part in giving the consumers the ideal experience for their packaging needs.

Recyclable or reusable Packaging

One thing that sustainable packaging does is that it uses materials that are reusable and recyclable.

For reusable, this can be packaging that you fill up, such as glass or little containers. If you bring them back, they can be cleaned and disinfected, and then used again, saving the planet little by little.   Usually, makeup and other food brands may do this, and even offer financial incentive for you to do this.

Compostable is the other.   soil and plants do thrive on health waste, and composting is one way to do it. it offers nutrients that might not be present otherwise in the soil, adding to the experience in its own way.   This type of packaging is really good, because if the consumers do it correctly, it aids not just with reduction of waste, but plant growth.

Finally, there is recyclable packaging, which is what most corrugated and other types of packaging are able to use.  This does rely on the consumer to take initiative to get rid of it.

With this type of packaging, you can get strong ones. For example, corrugated paper is a good tool that will ensure that the item is able to easily break down.   it’s so simple, and it can make marked strides in the overall results of your packaging experience.

It is also better as eco friendly shipping, especially when compared to plastic. Speaking of plastic, there are sustainable ones, such as bioplastics, which are all biodegradable. While more expensive, it is an option.

Reduce the Excess

You also want to look at how much you’re putting into your package in terms of void fill and excess.

That excess does make you look wasteful, and in many cases might not be necessary.

However, the biggest challenge with fragile and heavy goods is to have this packaging strong, and maintain protection while not looking wasteful.

The best way to go about doing this is to examine your packaging, in order to make sure you’re not being too excessive, and also performing drop and other tests to ensure that the item doesn’t break.

Why do This

While being eco friendly is great, you don't want to mess up the items your customers pay for.

With more and more people worried about waste, you should always look at the different products that you have, and from there make sure that they aren’t excessive or wasteful.

The planet is definitely at a point where care matters. When you care about your product packaging, you will see a difference. Being able to give customers something that will stay strong and also not destroy the environment looks good, and also convey to them your dedication to the planet.

A little goes a long way with your packaging, and when you’re able to offer packaging that’s simple, yet effective, you’ll see the difference immediately, and the results of the fruits of your labor apparent in everything that you do.

What Stickers, Labels and Decals are

Stickers, decals, and labels all may be similar, but there are different options. While the difference is slight, it affects the best purchasing option for each scenario.

We’re going to go over each of these, in order to give you the best options to choose from for packaging projects.

Defining Stickers, Labels, and Decals

You may wonder what the difference is and what’s best for you.

The basic definitions are a great place to start, as this will provide you with better options for your needs.

First, let’s talk about stickers. Stickers that are custom are smaller pieces of vinyl, paper, and also fabric with an adhesive to help with the back of this. they come in different colors, designs, shapes, and the like. They’re versatile for decoration and branding needs.

Decals are basically self-adhesive with a backing on there. they’re larger, far more permanent, and are used for branding and identification. They’re usually made from vinyl that’s cut into various shapes and will have a clear background that blends this directly into surfaces. You see these usually on store displays.

Finally, labels are basically a self-adhesive that’s made from paper, vinyl, polyester, but the usage of this is not decoration, nor identification. They usually are images with text on them, telling you about the product itself, the contents, and the usages of such.

From this alone, you see that they all stick directly to surfaces, so let’s drive a little bit deeper into the usages of each.

Decals, Stickers, and Labels—putting them Against each other

They’re all adhesives, but there are other aspects which make them differ too. While there are similarities, the materials that are used in it can differ, and there are other differences as well.

First, let’s talk about materials.  This is a good place to start.

Stickers are usually made with paper, matte, fabric, and even vinyl. They’re versatile when you choose materials that have different durability, looks, and even costs.  Paper stickers for instance tend to be a more affordable type of option, but are far less durable compared to vinyl’s.

Decals use vinyl, which means for the weather, they’re better.  They’re also far more durable and customizable.  This is very necessary because the decals tend to be larger, and usually can be exposed to more elements than the sticker might be able to handle.

Labels also use some similar stickers, and usually are thinner, which is why they’re used on a lot of products.  There are also some that come in metallic and holographic forms, but these tend to be a lot rarer than the others.

The Designs and Applications of each

Regarding the design options, stickers, labels and the like are similar. There are different sizes, and have a lot of possibilities that suit the needs of people. These range from small, even roundish adhesives Ito larger rectangular ones.  This also works for fully colored and printed designs.  There are die cuts which fit the exact shape.  There are also kiss cuts, which leaves the backings untrimmed.

There are similarities, but the differences happen in durability and the application. Stickers have to be applied manually. Labels can be applied with specialized machines in some instances. Stickers also tend to last far longer than labels, especially depending on the materials that are used. They also tend to be far thinner, since you’re using this to accommodate for mass applications of these stickers.

Knowing the difference is important, as it will help you with knowing exactly the types of items that you need to make, and the applications of such as well.
